Therapies & Support: Finding the Right Fit for Your Child

Once you have a diagnosis, the next overwhelming hurdle is the world of therapies. The autism world is full of jargon and acronyms—SLP, OT, ABA, DIR—and it can feel like you are expected to become a clinical expert overnight.

At Autism Compass, we believe there is no single “right” path. The goal of therapy should never be to “fix” your child or force them to mask who they are, but to give them the tools they need to communicate, regulate, and thrive.

Core Therapies to Consider

  • Speech-Language Pathology (SLP): SLPs do much more than just help with spoken words. They assist with non-verbal communication, social communication, and Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC) devices like tablets.
  • Occupational Therapy (OT): OTs are experts in daily living skills and sensory processing. They can help your child develop fine motor skills (like holding a pencil or using utensils) and create “sensory diets” to help them regulate their nervous system.
  • Play-Based and Relational Therapies: Approaches like DIR Floortime focus on following the child’s lead, getting down on the floor, and building social and emotional connections through play that is meaningful to them.

How to Choose the Right Support

When evaluating a therapist or clinic, keep these questions in mind:

  • Are they neurodiversity-affirming? Do they respect your child’s boundaries and sensory needs?
  • Is the therapy child-led? Your child should feel safe and engaged, not stressed or forced to comply.
  • Do they involve the parents? The best therapists empower you to carry over strategies into your daily life.

The Takeaway: You are the expert on your child. If a specific therapy or practitioner doesn’t feel right, you have the right to pivot. Build a support team that celebrates your child’s strengths just as much as they support their challenges.
